Honoring Mary & All Mothers, May 2017

Still to Come and Ongoing:

Throughout May: Did you know one in five mothers must choose between food and diapers? In honor of Mother’s Day, The St. Vincent de Paul Society will be collecting the items below during the month of May to help area mothers who are in need. Please leave donations in the narthex of the church or place monetary donations marked for SVDP in the offertory basket:

  • Unopened diapers or wipes
  • Board books
  • New blankets
  • Unopened formula
  • New bottles
  • Baby wash and baby shampoo

May 21: Christian Mothers will be making a social visit with a sing-a-long to St. Anne’s Home, Greensburg, on Sunday, May 21.  Please join us for a gratifying and fun-filled afternoon with the residents.  Meet in the St. Agnes parking lot at 12:30 p.m.

May 28: Volunteers are needed to escort the wheelchair patients to the 10:30 a.m. Mass at Westmoreland Manor on Sunday, May 28.  Please arrive at the Manor one hour before the start of the service.

Also Throughout May: St. Agnes mourns the loss of innocent babies killed by abortion.  Each one of the simple wooden crosses erected on the church lawn represents 10 of the 4,000 innocent lives lost each day in the United States.

May 6-7: All members and friends of Saint Agnes Parish are welcome to join in our celebration to honor Mary, the Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ as we Crown Her Queen of Heaven and Earth after Communion at all weekend Masses: Saturday 5/6 @ 4:30 p.m. and Sunday 5/7 @ 9:00 and 11:00 a.m.  You are also invited to participate in a collection of goods for the Blackburn Shelter.

May 13-14: At all Masses on Mother’s Day weekend (May 13-14) please arrive a few minutes early for Mass and join in singing many of our favorite Marian Hymns.  Our garden club will also have flowers for sale after all Masses.

How We Participated May 5-6

First Communicants: We are especially encouraging our First Communicants and their families to participate in the May Crowning. First Communicants should wear their Communion dress or suit because they will form the flower processional that honors Mary as she is crowned. First Communicants should be at the Church 20 minutes before Mass begins to review their part.  Photo Opportunity Note:  After both Masses on Sunday, May 7, we will have a photographer available to take individual and group pictures of all the First Communicants who are present. This is an optional service available to any family who might want a memento of their child’s First Holy Communion. Anyone wishing to purchase keepsake photos should come prepared to order and pay on Sunday, May 7. (Note: There will NOT be a photographer at the Saturday, May 6 4:30 Mass.)

Christian Mothers: Will join the First Communicants in the May Crowning procession.

Saint Agnes Choir: Will lead us in song during the procession.

All Mass Participants: Will join in singing during the crowning of Mary, our mother, Queen of Heaven and Earth.  After Mass, you are invited to take a flower from one of the Christian Mothers representing a needed supply for the Blackburn Shelter of Greensburg, PA.  Please bring the item requested to Mass next week.

How We Participated May 13-14:

Saint Agnes Choir: Before Mass begins, the choir will lead us in singing some of the beautiful Marian Hymns that have been passed on to us throughout the years.  “Immaculate Mary,”  “Hail Holy Queen,” and “O Most Holy One” to name a few.

Garden Club Members: will be available after all Masses for the annual Mother’s Day Flower sale.

All Parishioners and Friends:

  1. Please remember to return the Christian Mothers’ flower from last week with your donation of goods requested by the Blackburn Shelter of Greensburg, PA.  Donations will be accepted in the Server Sacristy before and after all Masses.
  2. Please also arrive at Mass a few minutes early to join in singing hymns to Mary, our Mother in Heaven.
  3. You will also be asked to pray for and honor all Mothers and Grandmothers who are with us today and those who are unable to be here or who are deceased.
  4. After Mass, you can purchase flowers offered by the Garden Club to beautify the outside of your home (or Mom’s!) throughout the summer and perhaps provide a nice memory of this day.

Oh, Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.
